Jülich DATA

Jülich DATA is the institutional research data repository at Forschungszentrum Jülich and serves as a reference system for data output.
Jülich DATA - Institutional repository for research data of Forschungszentrum Jülich

A platform for data publication

Employees of Forschungszentrum Jülich can publish their research data in Jülich DATA. Uploaded data are automatically assigned a DOI, which allows them to be cited. This creates an effective new publication channel that increases the visibility of research and encourages exchange across science.

A platform for reusing data

If someone anywhere in the world clicks on a Jülich DOI, they are directed to a landing page in Jülich DATA. The most important information on the data associated with the DOI are displayed here. The data can either be downloaded immediately or access may be requested.

Researchers can thus verify, reproduce, and in some cases reuse the data published in the repository in their own work.

A platform for searching data

Researchers all over the world can utilize Jülich DATA and perform searches within it for data from Forschungszentrum Jülich.

Flexible metadata: Managing the "hot data"

In one respect, Jülich DATA goes beyond the options offered by other repositories. We aim to offer a haven not only for published data, but also for the data’s long tail, or the “hot data”. These are data that have not yet been published, are only just being generated in some cases, or are explicitly forbidden from being published because they are subject to data protection, for example.

It must be possible to transfer hot data in an automated procedure from the Jülich institutes interested in them to Jülich DATA.

The major challenge here is the metadata. Keywords might be sufficient for a general research data search, but for a more complex search, researchers must be able to search for pressures and temperatures, for mouse cohorts, or for sample numbers. For this reason, Jülich DATA must be able to deal with various different metadata schemes.

The image shows our route to achieving this. There is a large number of metadata schemes in Jülich DATA, represented by boxes in this image. These boxes are nested within each other, as more specific schemes always contain the fields of the more general schemes.

Software

Jülich DATA uses the open source software Dataverse.
The Dataverse Project

Other services

The Central Library operates the Jülich DATA repository and offers additional services:

  • advisory services for all employees of Forschungszentrum Jülich
  • support in connecting Jülich DATA to the IT infrastructure on campus

Additionally, we are a member of the Dataverse community and are actively involved in further developing the software.
